AN INTERNATIONAL SHORT FILM FESTIVAL IN SASSUOLO SINCE 1993

Il pubblico in sala
Fourteen years ago the Association Circolo Culturale Fahrenheit 451 of Sassuolo has created a short-movie festival named Yasujiro Ozu. Since, the festival has grown beyond our expectations. Every year more than 500 authors from Italy and other countries apply to the festival admission. Artists as Franca Rame, Marco Paolini, Carla Signoris and Dino Abbrescia have taken part in the event.
The festival is totally free and as the years went by, it has obtained a prominent place among cinema fans of the region. Undoubtedly it's now the most important short-movie festival in the area and it's appreciated by very different kinds of public: from university students to pensioners and even children.
The Ozu was born in 1993 thanks to the intuition of a few cinema fans particularly devoted to the Japanese Maestro, Yasujiro Ozu, whom the festival was named after. The first editions were restricted on a local and evidently amateur level, before reaching a national and lately even European level. During that time, the quality of the participating films has also considerably increased. Nevertheless, the festival is still more interested in rewarding original ideas rather than technical perfection.
In fact the Ozu is now a partner of several important European festivals, as Platforma Video of Athens, the Docudays of Beirut, the festival "In the Palace" of Sophia, and Jovenes Realizadores of Saragossa. Other contacts have been started with French, Danish, Portuguese, Turkish, Serbian, and German festivals. Thanks to these partnerships the Ozu hopes to join the Media European project for the promotion and the circulation of cinematography and visual art.
These exchanges between festivals allow the authors to diffuse their works easily, avoiding the difficulties of the traditional distribution.
From 2003 to 2006 the Ozu festival has been a partner of the International Short Film Festival of Siena, one of the most important short-movie festivals in Italy. The Siena festival has given during three years a space to Ozu’s winners in its partner festival section.
In the 2005 edition the Ozu has collaborated with Cinemaindipendente.it by projecting their first national cinematographic production: the movie, "Come Prima", investigates the difficulties of adolescence and diversity. The protagonist, Giuseppe Cederna, has already played in the Oscar prized Gabriele Salvatore's "Mediterrano". The distribution was realized thanks to the support of a non conventional cultural associations network all over the country.
In 2006 the Ozu has been the only Italian representative in the international festival Platforma Video of Athens. A retrospective of its best works since 2004, has been dedicated to The Ozu. Therefore the winner of the XIV Yasujiro Ozu has been invited and lodged in Athens during the event, from the 2nd to 7th December 2006, to introduce his movie. A member of the Fahrenheit 451 crew was also invited and introduced the section dedicated to our festival.
For the 2006 edition F451 has launched an advertising campaign on the theme "short is better". An advertisement was projected in the cinema of the city. It’s also available here.
The festival is mentioned and supported by the most important specialized magazines and webzines as Cortoweb.it, Sentieri Selvaggi, Shortvillage, Cinemaindipendente.it and others.
